The Advantage of Taking Initiative to Fight Your Traffic Violation
A common misconception is that the repercussions of traffic violations like a speeding ticket or a careless driving offence end at the initial fine. In fact, the consequences of such traffic violations can extend to driver’s license suspensions and higher insurance premiums, among other penalties.
These added penalties can be particularly damaging for new drivers who face “escalated sanctions” for offences involving 4 or more demerit points. If you’re dealing with traffic charges, it’s crucial to fully understand all the potential outcomes before admitting guilt. Otherwise, you might end up paying far more than just the initial fine.
We take pride in helping clients take the initiative in their cases and work towards getting their charges dismissed.
Have You Received a Traffic Ticket in the Kitchener Area?
Kitchener is a part of the Waterloo Region, which is policed by two law enforcement agencies: the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The driving conditions in Kitchener are diverse, ranging from intersecting highways to gravel roads, reflecting the diversity of the population.
Within the Waterloo region, there are approximately 40 roundabouts with road speeds spanning from 30 km/hr to 90 km/hr. This variation in driving conditions means that each time you step into your vehicle, you encounter a potentially different driving experience. Given this dynamic environment, it’s unsurprising that the Waterloo region witnessed a substantial issuance of driving-related tickets, totalling over 40,000 in 2021.
If you have been issued a ticket for a traffic violation, whether it’s a speeding ticket or any other, OTD Legal is here to provide you with the assistance you need. Our dedicated team is ready to guide you through the legal process, helping you navigate the complexities of your situation and protect your rights.
What Types of Traffic Tickets Do the WRPS and OPP Issue?
The WRPS’s STEP program (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program), which responds to complaints regarding speeding and other violations, contributes significantly to the issuance of traffic tickets in the Region. Additionally, it’s common to observe WRPS vehicles conducting random speed traps on local roads. Meanwhile, the OPP plays a prominent role in patrolling the expressway and Highway 401 within the Waterloo Region.
In the year 2021 alone, more than 4,500 speeding tickets were issued in the Region. Both law enforcement agencies prioritize the “Fatal Five” offences, leading to a substantial number of yearly citations for speeding, stunt driving or racing, careless driving, distracted driving, and failure to wear a seatbelt tickets. This list includes turning charges, non-moving violations, and other offences.

What Should I Do if I am Pulled Over for a Traffic Offence in Kitchener?
- Pull your vehicle safely over to the right or off the road completely. If you are in the left lane, signal and move to the right side of the road.
- Be polite with the officer at the side of the road. You can defend yourself in court if desired/necessary at a later date. The side of the road is not the time to argue.
- Remain silent. You do not have to give the officer any evidence that will then be used against you in court later on.
- Contact OTD Legal Services. We are here to assist you with any traffic ticket you receive. We have the experience to fight your traffic ticket and put you in position to receive a favourable outcome in your case.
Where is the Kitchener Traffic Court located?
Kitchener Traffic Court
Kitchener’s Provincial Offences court (traffic court), located at 77 Queen Street North, Kitchener is a very busy court. There are two courtrooms in the building at 77 Queen Street North, and another “overflow” courtroom located at 20 Weber Street East.
Despite having three dedicated courtrooms, the wait time to have your matter heard can sometimes be hours. Kitchener has recently adopted a tier system, so you may have a matter scheduled as early as 8:30 a.m. or as late as 3:30 p.m.
Even with the tier system, you should expect that court services will take at least half the day. Parking at the courthouse is located close by. There are several parking lots to choose from. You must pay for parking by the hour or by the day.
