What You Need To Know About The New License Plate Sticker Laws In Ontario For 2022

by | Aug 8, 2022 | General Blog

On Tuesday February 22, 2022, the Provincial government announced new legislation to end the cost associated with yearly license plate renewals in Ontario. This legislation will save Southern Ontario drivers $120.00 per year and Northern Ontario drivers $60.00 per year.

The legislation comes into effect on March 13, 2022, and applies to all passenger vehicles, light duty trucks, motorcycles, and mopeds. The legislation does not apply to heavy commercial motor vehicles or snowmobiles.

Am I Eligible For A License Plate Refund?

Ontarians who paid to renew their license plates after March 1, 2020, will be issued a refund. Refunds will be issued via cheque towards the end of March and beginning of April 2022.

In order to receive this refund, the following guidelines need to be met by March 7, 2022:

  • Your address is up to date on the Provincial website. To update your address or to check to see if your address is up to date click here
  • Any outstanding fees, fines, or tolls need to be paid. To submit payment click here.

Although passenger vehicles, light duty trucks, motorcycles, and mopeds owned by a business or company will no longer have to pay for renewals, they will not be eligible for the refund.

License plates will still need to be renewed every one or two years for proof of insurance and to ensure there are no outstanding fees, fines or tolls associated with your plate, but there will be no cost to renew, and no stickers will be issued. Physical stickers have already been eliminated in Quebec, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, and the Northwest Territories.
